HARRISBURG — The number of traffic deaths in Pennsylvania has dropped significantly and reached an all-time low in 2014. PennDOT reports the number of people killed on Pennsylvania roads in 2014 totaled 1,195, which is the lowest number since recordkeeping began in 1928.
PennDOT data shows that while the number of highway deaths dropped in many types of crashes, there were significant decreases in unbuckled crashes, drunk-driving crashes and crashes involving motorists hitting trees. Unbuckled fatalities dropped from 425 to 383. Drunk-driving accidents declined from 342 to 294.
One area where crash fatalities increased was drowsy or sleeping drivers, which increased from 10 in 2013 to 23 in 2014. (Ali Stevens)
