Jake Tapper, journalist, author, cartoonist and lead Washington anchor for CNN, will speak as part of The Bucknell Forum on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts.

Tapper is one of five nationally renowned speakers who will discuss the theme “The State of American Democracy” in this year’s Bucknell Forum — a speaker series that since 2007 has featured national leaders, scholars and commentators who have examined various issues from multidisciplinary and diverse viewpoints.

Susquehanna University’s Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform concerts at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 3, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art. The events are free and open to the public.

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of David Rohrer, adjunct faculty member in music, will perform “Moorside March” by Gustav Holst, “Symphony #3 ‘Slavyanskaya’” by Boris Kozhevnikov, “Smiling After the Rain” by Yukiko Nishimura, as well as “Windsprints” by Richard Saucedo, “Everything Beautiful” from “The Stillness of Remembering” by Samuel R. Hazo, and two dances from “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett.

The university Symphonic Band was selected to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s State Conference in April of 2022.

Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a series of classes through the month of December. For the safety of participants, masking is required while inside Hospital facilities and during all learning sessions. Physical distancing and frequent handwashing/use of hand sanitizer are encouraged for participants who attend classes.

Prepared Childbirth Classes:

Newborn Care: Saturday, December 3, 8:30 am-12:30 pm, at Evangelical Community Hospital in the Miller Conference Center. $30 per couple. This class is designed to teach caregivers how to diaper, bathe, and feed their baby. This class also covers post-partum depression and care of the new mother.

Prenatal Breastfeeding: Wednesday, December 7, 6-8 pm, at Evangelical Community Hospital in the Miller Conference Center. $20 per couple. This class is for the expectant mother and one support person. The course covers the advantages of breastfeeding and the common concerns associated with it.

Prepared Childbirth Class: Saturday, December 10, 9 am-4 pm, at Evangelical Community Hospital in the Miller Conference Center. $50 per couple. This course guides parents and support persons through childbirth, including labor, delivery, breathing, and relaxation.

Prepared Childbirth Refresher Class: Dates are not pre-determined; please call the Community Health and Wellness at 570-786-3200 to schedule your class. $25 registration fee. Designed to refresh parents on the basics of childbirth. Couples are provided with current labor technique information in a private, appointment-only setting.

CPR Classes:

Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, and AED Skills Check Class: Friday, December 9, 8:30 am, at The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg. This class is designed to teach students the cognitive information needed for first aid, CPR, and AED training. It’s intended for anyone with little to no medical training in need of a course completion card and have completed the online portion through the American Heart Association website. Hands-on practice and testing are conducted in person with an AHA BLS or Heartsaver Instructor. Fee $25. Registration is required; call 570-768-3200 or register online.

HeartCode BLS Skills Check Class: Friday, December 9, 12:30 pm, at The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg. This structured Basic Life Support (BLS) hands-on session is for healthcare professionals seeking an alternative method for completing an initial or renewal course and have completed the online portion through the American Heart Association website. This session will use a variety of eLearning assets such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students BLS knowledge and skills. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Class: Tuesday, December 13, 1 pm, at The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg. This American Heart Association course is for the healthcare provider in and out of hospital settings in need of CPR certification. Students will learn how to initiate the Chain of Survival, perform prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adult, child, and infant victims, initiate early use of an AED, and much more. $47 registration fee. AARP Smart Driver Refresher Course: Tuesday, December 6, 12:30-4:30 pm, at The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg. Wellness 360 Active Aging Network: Stroke Awareness, Monday, December 12, 10:15 am, The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg led by Tresa Keiser, RN, MSN, Stroke Coordinator, Evangelical Community Hospital. This talk will focus on the signs and symptoms of stroke, types of stroke, B.E.F.A.S.T., and prevention strategies. Registration is required. Safe Sitters: Wednesday, December 28, 8:30 am-2 pm, at The Miller Center, 120 Hardwood Drive, Lewisburg. A medically accurate Safe Sitter course for children ages 11 and up. Participants learn everything they need to know to be a great sitter by gaining the skills and confidence needed to do the job well and earn parents’ trust. Freedom from Smoking: Over the course of eight sessions, learn to overcome tobacco addiction with the help of certified educators through this FREE program. Skin Cancer Screen: Tuesday, December 20, 1-4:30 pm, at Surgical Specialists of Evangelical, 25 Lystra Rogers Drive, Lewisburg. This free screening, with Daria Keyser, DO, helps individuals recognize their own pattern of moles, freckles, and “beauty marks.” By being familiar with what is considered normal allows people to be more alert to changes in the number, size, shape, and color of pigmented areas that may be of concern. Aquila Theatre’s striking new production of Shakespeare’s political thriller, Julius Caesar, bursts into life with complex characters and powerful contemporary parallels.
