WILLIAMSPORT — In Williamsport, a retiring Mount Carmel police chief was added to a federal lawsuit alleging unreasonable force by borough officers. PennLive reports the case stems from claims filed by Steve Gonzalez against Mount Carmel police.
PennLive reports Gonzalez filed a separate complaint naming Chief Christopher Buhay, alleging he approved or ignored excessive force by officers. The lawsuit followed an incident during a noise complaint response in December 2023 involving Officer Tyler Herbster.
The civil cases trace back to a 2023 federal indictment of three former Mount Carmel officers who later pleaded guilty to civil rights violations. Gonzalez sought compensatory and punitive damages.
