HARRISBURG — State lawmakers appear close to ending Pennsylvania’s 19-week budget impasse with a $50.1 billion spending plan. The deal reportedly keeps most of Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed education funding increases while avoiding new taxes or use of the state’s rainy-day fund.
Republican leaders say the plan is more restrained than Shapiro’s $51.5 billion proposal, while Democrats secured funding for low-income families and public schools. Lawmakers are also weighing whether to drop the state’s legal fight to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
