SUNBURY- You’ve heard about the fight for stricter guns laws, but two Second Amendment rights advocates say we don’t need more firearms restrictions. The On The Mark guests say we need to more severely punish violations of existing gun laws. For example, when a federal firearm law is broken locally, there are only minor local penalties.
Bill Toth, former chair of the Columbia County Republican party, FFL holder and gun rights activist was a guest of On The Mark and says that has to change, “Why would you hit someone with a summary when they signed and they acknowledge if they falsified the form they’re guilty of both the state and federal felony.”
He said, “You lose the deterrent effect. That’s where I think we can make improvement is the enforcement of the existing laws. The thing is when you have somebody that’s guilty of this crime, and you want to keep the weapons out of the hands of the ineligible people, there they are, you have them, and you let them walk for $300.”
Another concern is about the increasing amount of gun-free zones. Curt Moorhead, Owner of Curt’s Gun Shot was also a guest of On The Mark, “The more gun free zones we have in this country, the more likely they’ll be attacked by someone who wants to do something bad to the people who are in those areas. It just entices someone that has a mental problem to go into that area because they know that the 10-1 there’s not going to be as many people carrying firearms.”
