SUNBURY- A massive fire destroyed part of the SunRe Cheese Factory on Lenker Avenue in Sunbury Sunday morning. The fire started just before 8 a.m. at the building at 178 Lenker Avenue. A second alarm sounded soon after the initial call. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a working fire. The building partially collapsed forcing most of the firefighters to work from ladder trucks and outside of the building to bring the fire under control.
Lori Geiswhite of 1021 Penn Avenue in Sunbury, “There were flames coming out the bottom of the roof and there was a lot of smoke. I came out right away and these people didn’t start coming around until 45 minutes ago. I know a couple of people that work over there. I don’t know what they’re going to do now. It was an everyday operation, three shifts a day.”
Parts Raspberry, Lenker and Penn Avenues were closed for part of the day. Fire crews from Sunbury were assisted by volunteers firefighters from across Northumberland and Snyder Counties. No injuries have been reported. A fire marshal will investigate on Tuesday to try to determine what caused the fire. (Matt Catrillo)
