SUNBURY – Teens in Sunbury will soon have a new place to hang out. Sunbury’s Revitalization Inc. is spearheading the effort to develop a place that will be “for teens and by teens.” Chris Reis, chair of the committee says the center will have business inside that will be run by the kids, “Inside the center will be a business that the teens will run. Probably like a snack bar. They’ll have different jobs, different duties that will be assigned to every kid that gets a job there.”
The center will be open two days a week. Reis says, “Wednesday nights will be just kind of a hang out, do some homework, meet with friends, just not being home by yourself or not doing anything else that you shouldn’t be. Saturdays will be more of like a party. There will be music, games and activities down there.”
There will be an organizational meeting for anyone interested in being part of the center April 7 at 7p.m at the center’s location, 604 Market Street in Sunbury. Reis says they will select a leadership team of teens at the meeting, “The teens will actually then design the center themselves, the ones that we pick as leaders and the whole group that want to be involved. The goal to open in September.”
Reis says the United Way Youth Impact Council is partnering with SRI to develop the program. (Jennifer Wakeman)
