HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Gov. Tom Wolf is warning that steep spending cuts on education and higher borrowing costs are among the inevitable consequences if he can’t get Republican lawmakers to support higher taxes to pay for bad budgeting practices he inherited.
The first-term Democrat declined to reveal Monday whether he has been able to attract any Republican support for higher taxes, two days before his plan could see a vote in the state House.
Wolf is expected to unveil his revised tax plan on Tuesday, and in the meantime he’s been seeking GOP votes.
The governor says broad-based taxes are necessary to wipe out the GOP’s funding cuts for schools and human services and to eliminate a long-term budget deficit.
The Pennsylvania state government budget impasse will reach 100 days later this week.
