West Nile Virus found in Union County

 

MIFFLINBURG – The West Nile Virus has popped up again in The Valley. A mosquito sample collected in Mifflinburg, Union County, has test positive for West Nile. The state Department of Environmental Protection’s West Nile Control Program tells us, they regularly monitors mosquito and bird populations for West Nile Virus.  This is the first positive test in the Valley this season.

Staff at Pennsylvania’s West Nile Virus Control Program are responding with additional surveillance and control as needed.

 

The DEP says you can avoid mosquitoes’ bites by wearing long pants and long sleeves in the summer, wear a DEET based bug spray, and make sure there is no standing water on your property.   West Nile virus causes an inflammation of the brain that can be fatal to humans.  (Jennifer Wakeman)
