SUNBURY — While the art world globally is watching a sale of formerly locally owned artworks, the event is passing quietly here. The New York Times is reporting… Robert F. Weis, the late former chairman of Weis Markets, and his wife, Patricia, spent nearly 70 years amassing an extraordinary art collection inside their Sunbury home.

The newspaper reports, the couple’s private collection included works by Picasso, Matisse, and many others. The art was seldom loaned and virtually unknown to many experts.

Following Robert’s death in 2015 and Patricia’s in 2024; their three children have chosen to sell the collection. The New York Times reports, this November, Christie’s in New York will auction 80 works, expected to bring in more than $180 million, with some individual paintings valued at $40 million to $50 million.
