WATSONTOWN – When they have a big celebration of Watsontown’s history this weekend, they’ll be holding a historic event. A three-day celebration is planned for the unveiling of the Watsontown Historical Association’s new museum and headquarters. They are planning tours of their new building, dignitary and local history guest speakers, the official ribbon cutting, and the dedication of various rooms and exhibits in the museum.
Diana Johnson is a board member of the association, she says, the wobbling, walking toys, known as the ‘Wilson Walkies’ began in Watsontown factories during World War II, “After the men went off to fight, the women ran the factory and this is how they made extra money. They became so popular they were sold by places like the World’s Fair, and they’d sell them for souvenirs and stuff as well.”
She says, music, food and many other activities are planned, today, Saturday and Sunday, in and around the former Farmer’s National Bank, most recently owned by Santander Bank, and donated to the association. One of the exhibit rooms is dedicated to Radio Ranch, which was in the Watsontown region, they have a ‘Hall of Valor,’ saluting those who served in US armed forces, and first responders.
Other exhibits focus on banking, commerce, business, churches, the Watson Theater, Philco/Zenith industries, and the dedication of the First Street Park, in memory of Dr. Robert Yannaccone. Details on the happenings are posted on Watsontown Historical Association’s Facebook page.
