Wagner still trailing Wolf: AP PA Headlines, Features, Scores & Skeds

AP Headlines 10/08/18

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Tom Wolf was in the midst of telling a Democratic Party dinner crowd last month how important it is for Democrats to tell voters what they stand for in this mid-term election campaign when he interrupted himself.  “Are you aware I’m running for re-election?” he said.  The punchline elicited cheers, but Wolf seemed to voice a widely shared assessment of the race: The low-key governor is barely breaking a sweat in running a disciplined and conservative re-election campaign.

Despite the fact that Republican Scott Wagner is burning up the campaign trail — more than 600 campaign stops, according to Wagner — the brash waste-hauling millionaire and former state senator has struggled to exploit a weakness in his opponent.  Wolf has consistently led independent polls by double-digits and his huge campaign cash advantage over Wagner — five-to-one, as of Sept. 17 — was somewhat unexpected. More than one-third of the $28 million Wolf has reporting raising since the start of 2017 came from labor unions, a regular target of Wagner’s sharpest attacks.

Features

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Danielle Walker cried on Joe Manchin’s shoulder after she shared her story of sexual assault in the senator’s office. She thought he listened.  The 42-year-old Morgantown woman said she was both devastated and furious when Manchin became the only Democrat in the U.S. Senate to support President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

“I feel raped all over again,” Walker told The Associated Press.  A day after Manchin broke with his party on what may be the most consequential vote of the Trump era, the vulnerable Democrat is facing a political firestorm back home. While Republicans — including one of the president’s sons — are on the attack, the most passionate criticism is coming from Manchin’s very own Democratic base, a small but significant portion of the electorate he needs to turn out in force to win re-election next month. A Manchin loss would put his party’s hopes of regaining control of the Senate virtually out of reach.

Walker, a first-time Democratic candidate for the state legislature, said she may not vote at all in the state’s high-stakes Senate election. Julia Hamilton, a 30-year-old educator who serves on the executive committee of the Monongalia County Democratic Party, vowed to sit out the Senate race as well.

NEW YORK (AP) — Scott Wilson, who played the murderer Richard Hickock in 1967’s “In Cold Blood” and was a series regular on “The Walking Dead,” has died. He was 76.  AMC, the show’s network, announced Wilson’s death Saturday. The network called Wilson’s character on “The Walking Dead,” veterinarian Hershel Greene, “the emotional core of the show.”

Wilson starred on series from 2011 to 2014. His return for the upcoming season was announced just hours earlier on Saturday. Wilson already filmed his scenes for season nine.  In the same year as Wilson’s breakthrough in “In Cold Blood,” he also played murder suspect Harvey Oberst in “In the Heat of the Night.”

He appeared in 1974’s “The Great Gatsby” as George Wilson, in “The Right Stuff” as pilot Scott Crossfield and earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1980 for his performance in “The Ninth Configuration,” in which he played a former astronaut.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Funeral directors in Maryland are increasingly concerned their employees could be exposed to opioids. That’s why some are stocking naloxone, the medication the reverses the effects of an overdose.  The Baltimore Sun reported Friday that funeral directors are calling themselves the “last responders” to the opioid epidemic. The concern is that employees could come into contact with opioids on a dead person’s body or the clothes of a mourner.

Synthetic opioids like fentanyl and carfentanyl can be deadly, even in quantities as small as a grain of salt when inhaled or absorbed through the skin.  The National Funeral Directors Association is recommending members to prepare for the possibility that someone could suffer from exposure. The association has said that members should recognize overdose symptoms and train staff to administer naloxone

LONDON (AP) — There will be military fanfare and red velvet cake when Princess Eugenie weds this week — Britain’s second royal wedding of the year.  The 28-year-old granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II is due to marry liquor company executive Jack Brooksbank on Friday in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Prince Harry, her cousin, and American actress Meghan Markle married at the same venue in May.

Buckingham Palace said Sunday that Eugenie’s service will feature a trumpet fanfare and Scottish pipers, a performance by Italian singer Andrea Bocelli and a prayer written by Archbishop of York John Sentamu.

London baker Sophie Cabot is making the red velvet-and-chocolate wedding cake, billed as “a traditional cake with a modern feel.”  The younger daughter of Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, Eugenie is ninth in line to the British throne.

LONDON (AP) — Tina Turner carries a bit of her husband with her wherever she goes, quite literally. Turner reveals she had a kidney transplant and her husband, Erwin Bach, was the donor. Turner makes the revelation in her upcoming autobiography, “Tina Turner: My Love Story,” which was excerpted in the Daily Mail newspaper.

Turner, who is 78, says by 2016, her kidney function was “20 percent and plunging rapidly.” She says her husband shocked her by offering one of his kidneys. She says after the transplant, she felt “happy, overwhelmed and relieved that we’d come through this alive.” Turner and Bach have been married since 2013. The book comes out later this month.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Sony comic-book movie “Venom” has shrugged off bad reviews to shatter the October box-office record with an $80 million debut, while Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” soared to $42.6 million. According to estimates Sunday, the two very different films fueled an unusually robust October weekend at the North American box office.

Despite a 32 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the anti-hero “Spider-Man” spinoff “Venom” opened with $205.2 million globally. The previous best October opening was $55.7 million for “Gravity” in 2013. Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” remake, also starring Lady Gaga, has been hailed by critics and pegged as an Oscar front-runner. It drew an audience that was 66 percent female and 68 percent older than 35.

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s one of the enduring mysteries of life in New York City: Just how many squirrels live in Central Park?  There could soon be an answer. The Counters started roaming the 840-acre park on Saturday for its first ever Squirrel Census . The Organizers of the two-week count tell The New York Times they’re looking to learn more about squirrel behavior and urban green space.

Jamie Allen led similar censuses of Inman Park in 2012 and 2016. He says the projects are filling a data void on squirrels and exposing patterns in how they live.  The Atlanta results helped inform a paper on the spread of West Nile virus.  The Central Park counters are tracking squirrels’ activities, such as running and foraging, coat color and sounds they make.  Their findings will be made public in the spring.

Sports, Scores & Skeds

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner is starting to emerge from Le’Veon Bell’s considerable shadow. Conner piled up 185 total yards and two touchdowns in Pittsburgh’s 41-17 romp over Atlanta. Conner has been filling in while Bell waits to sign his one-year franchise tender. He put together his most complete performance as a pro against the Falcons as Pittsburgh improved to 2-2-1. The reeling Falcons have dropped three straight to fall to 1-4. The Steelers play on our sister station 100.9 The Valley.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles won’t have time to dwell on another loss. Kirk Cousins and Linval Joseph helped the Minnesota Vikings beat the Eagles 23-21 in a rematch of last season’s NFC championship game featuring two teams struggling to find an identity. Now the Eagles get set to face the Giants on Thursday night.

Mental mistakes, turnovers and too many penalties have turned the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles into a mediocre team. Carson Wentz and the rest of Philadelphia’s offense again had trouble converting in the red zone and on third down, even after the defense gave them a perfect opportunity to take a lead. Now the Eagles have lost two games in a row for the first time since 2016, which was the previous time they had a losing record.  The Eagles play on our sister station Eagle 107 (107.3FM).
