SUNBURY– Chief Shikellamy students shared a root beer float with their principal Friday afternoon as a reward in the principal’s 100 club.
Marie Murphy, Learning Support Teacher, spoke about the positive behavior support program that was created this school year saying, “The students are acknowledged in six different areas of the school for the positive choices that they are making, in the hallway, bathrooms, recess, cafeteria, classroom, and on and off the bus.”
Murphy says the program has changed the environment at school, “The students really get excited about being acknowledged for what they are suppose to be doing, and it’s kind of made the staff more accountable also in not just talking to the students about the negative things they are doing but putting a positive spin on it.”
Megan Steese, Classroom Intervention Specialist, set up a Donors Choose account to purchase oversized inflatable chairs and lap top desk boards for her students, “It’s been great, behaviors have totally gone down, they’re not talking, they’re not chatting because they are kind of in their own little world , their little cocoon. So, they don’t even really notice the kid beside them to talk. ”
The hope for the new furnishings is to spark student interest and improve performance. ( Sarah Benek)
