TREVORTON — The winter weather has been taking a toll on people — and businesses — across The Valley. Over 2,000 people were without power for several hours Wednesday afternoon and evening in Northumberland County. A large majority of those outages were in Trevorton, where Heath’s Gym was forced to close Wednesday evening.
Sherry Heath is gym owner, “It’s tough, because it’s the new year and we’ve got a lot of new members trying to work on their New Year’s resolutions, and we have to close because no power means no heat, no lights and no music for our aerobics classes.”
Homes were dark, and the large clock on the Trevorton Middle School seemed to be the only light in town early Wednesday evening.
“Trevorton seems to get hit hard in the winter,” Heath said. “Last time we were supposed to get 3-6 inches, and we had about 14 here in the back yard… I’m hoping the worst is over, but I’m sure it’s only just begun.”
PPL employees worked for several hours to restore power to Northumberland County customers. The outages began around 4:30p.m. Wednesday, and power was not fully restored to all county customers until about 9:00p.m. At one point, 2,317 customers were without power. Heavy winds and snow squalls were said to have brought down power lines in the area. (Codi Jade)
