SELINSGROVE—The Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way hosted a diversity and inclusion event Wednesday night at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Selinsgrove. About 50 children from ages eight to eighteen turned out to hear from a mother whose son committed suicide in 2010.
Tammy Simpson, mother of the late Brandon Bittner, spoke to the children about how they can prevent bullying, “Talk to an adult at home, even if it’s not your parents. If it’s an aunt, an uncle, a neighbor, whoever you feel comfortable with, talk to them and let them get involved.”
Simpson also urged parents to be involved in their children’s lives,“You’re the parent. Check their computers, check their phones, know what’s going on in school. Be involved with your kids, plain and simple.”
The event was part of the United Way’s “The Valley Together” series which concludes next Wednesday with another seminar on diversity and inclusion at 4:30 pm at St. Paul’s on Market Street in Selinsgrove. (Kory Kramer)
