United Way hosting discussion on LGBTQ families in the Valley

LEWISBURG—An inspiring community discussion is set to take place in Lewisburg tonight. The Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way’s  Impact Council will be hosting another event in their “The Valley Together” series. “LGBTQ: Raising children in the Susquehanna Valley” will be held 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Public Library for Union County.

Brianne Croteau one of the panelist for this evening says the issues LGBTQ parents face are similar to the issues every parent goes through, “What we face on a daily basis is really a universal parenting challenge. Everybody fears for thier kids, everybody wants what’s best for their kids, everybody wants to do as much for thier children as possible to make sure they have a smooth, easy, healthy and safe life.”

The Impact Council’s mission is to promote communities where people embrace diversity so that all people feel welcome and included. Panelist, Todd Leister hopes this event will give parents peace of mind, “I think one of the things I would like people to be able to take away when they go home is a little peace of mind. I think there may be some parents who have concerns about what does it mean if my kid comes out or any sort of struggles they may feel that they have.”

Upcoming events include: “Trek the Trail for Tomorrow” on October 15, from 2-4 p.m. at Ard’s Farm Market in Lewisburg, and “Saudi Arabian Community Meal” on November 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Selinsgrove. For more information visit gsvuw.org.
