Union and Snyder studying 911 merger

policeLEWISBURG – Two more Valley counties are considering merging their 911 service. Commissioners in both Union and Snyder Counties agreed Tuesday to hire a consultant to conduct an assessment and determine whether or not merging the 911 service makes sense.

Commissioner John Mathias said the goal is to reduce the overall cost to the counties for 911 services and regionalization is one way to save money. Union County spends about $1 million annually and serves residents in both Union and upper Northumberland County.

Columbia and Montour County have already begun the process of regionalization for their 911 services.

The study for Union and Snyder Counties will take four to six months to complete at a total cost of $55,000. (Jennifer Wakeman)
