MIDDLEBURG – Only two projects have submitted paperwork to receive Community Development Block Grant funding from Snyder County. The county has $187,000 to distribute to projects and two municipalities have applied for funding.
The Beavertown Municipal Authority has requested up to $117,000 for their water main replacement project. The water system serves Beavertown and portions of Beaver Township and they are currently dealing with leaking pipes, losing about 20 to 40,000 gallons of water per day. The project would replace a leaking pipe on Zechman Street, and if the full amount requested is received, they would also replace a pipe on Kern Street.
The other request was received from the McClure Municipal Authority for their sewer rehabilitation project. The borough is requesting $94,737 towards the project, which is expected to cost more than $1-million. Recent investigations of the sewer mains in McClure revealed several areas where the lines are experiencing large amounts of groundwater infiltration during precipitation. The groundwater then enters the collection system and overloads the treatment facility, which results in bypassing raw sewage to Middle Creek. The Snyder County Commissioners have also submitted a CDBG Competitive Application to help security more funding for the project from the state.
Snyder County Commissioner Malcolm Derk says the commissioners will decide on how much funding will be allocated to these two projects at their meeting on August 2nd. (Ali Stevens)
