NORTHUMBERLAND – The two fire companies that make up the Northumberland Fire Department have received permission to consolidate. Fire Chief Brian Crebs says Northumberland Fire Company Number One and Northumberland Hook and Ladder Company make up the Northumberland Fire Department.
Crebs said, “We are now a legal department that is strictly focused on the delivery of emergency services to the borough of Northumberland and surrounding communities. The good news is that we are still well supported by both companies. Both of the social clubs and the companies are going to continue to support the department as a whole. So, the only thing that is really changing is the tactical, hands-on, firefighting activities and training that we do.”
Crebs explained why this was a good move for them, “The naming of a legal entity and what we were able to accomplish is a milestone. It solved a whole bunch of headaches for us on the administrative side, primarily. We’ve had insurance issues crop up over the last year. You know, just having to seek out funds and different means from both companies individually has been a challenge at times. Folks going to more meetings and things like that.”
Crebs said their goal is to remain volunteer and to have that service available well into the future. The announcement regarding the consolidation was made at the Northumberland and Point Township Fireman’s Banquet. (Ali Stevens)
