Time to get your team ready for this year’s Miles for Macy event

SUNBURY — The second annual Miles for Macy walk will take place in June, but now is the time to start forming your team.  Nicole Attinger of Sunbury organized the first Miles for Macy event, to benefit Shikellamy math teacher Macy Minnier, who has ALS disease.

Attinger said, “I thought about doing something for the Minnier family when I heard he was diagnosed with ALS because I knew that insurance didn’t cover a lot of treatment and expenses that families who are affected by ALS will need to cover.  I wanted to do something to help with fundraising for them.”

Her mother Beth Ziegler was glad to help and says the Minnier family needs assistance, “The needs are definitely growing.  Macy is in the hospital as we speak.  Yesterday, they placed a feeding tube and prayerfully he will be able to come home today if he responds well.  He is in need of a communication device.  The reason for the feeding tube is it is becoming difficult to swallow, so he is going to need some additional in-home care that his family won’t necessarily be able to provide.”

Attinger recommends attending an upcoming meeting to get involved, “We have a team kickoff on Friday March 31 at the Shikellamy High School cafeteria at 6 p.m.  Anybody that is interested in being involved, you can start trying to form a team.  Just come to the kickoff event and see what we are about and see how you can help.”

Ziegler talks about the Miles for Macy walk, “The walk is Sunday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Shikellamy Stadium.  There will be live entertainment and you will be able to register if you can’t get to the kickoff meeting on the 31st.  You can register on the Shikellamy website or you can call the Shikellamy Administration Office at 570-286-3721 and just ask for Beth.”

The website to register is Shikbraves.org.  You can also find them on Facebook at Miles for Macy.  (Ali Stevens)
