Susquehanna Valley United Way Lays Off Four Employees

SUNBURY – Tough news from the Susquehanna Valley United Way as four full-time employees have been laid off by the organization. President and CEO Adrienne Mael told WKOK Tuesday it was a ‘strategic, incredibly hard decision’ by the organization’s Board of Directors. Mael says the board also made the decision ‘to do right for the community.’

Mael says the newly merged organization’s 2022 capital campaign was down $135,000, which played a factor into the layoffs. She says the pandemic and current inflation rates have made it hard for the community to give to the campaign.

Mael says the board is now coming up with new strategies ‘so this doesn’t happen again.’ Mael says the organization’s usual events will still take place as normal despite the layoffs.

Following the layoffs, Mael says the organization has 13 full-time employees, 10 of which are grant-filled.

The United Way’s 2023 capital campaign will begin this fall.
