SUNBURY- A cause has been determined from a massive fire destroying part of the SunRe Cheese Factory. The investigation revealed an electrical problem caused the fire. The blaze occurred within the southeast corner of the building in the area of an exhaust fan. Damage is estimated at $3 million.
The fire started just before 8 a.m. Sunday at the building at 178 Lenker Avenue in Sunbury. A second alarm sounded soon after the initial call. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a working fire. The building partially collapsed forcing most of the firefighters to work from ladder trucks and outside of the building to bring the fire under control.
Parts Raspberry, Lenker and Penn Avenues were closed for part of the day. Fire crews from Sunbury were assisted by volunteers firefighters from across Northumberland and Snyder Counties. No injuries were reported. (Matt Catrillo)
