SUNBURY – It was a tumultuous Sunday and Monday in Sunbury, all thought to be tied to a social media post.
The shooting of Pres. Trump Saturday apparently prompted one critic to say on social media, it would have been better if Trump was hit ‘square on.’ The post was pulled down by X but not before the controversy went viral.
Tony Bendele of Sunbury, a well-known photographer, made the post on X. After posting, he said he was threatened and his family was threatened. The incident is thought to be connected to a bomb threat phoned into the Americus Hose Company. Bendele was a captain at the fire company, but he has resigned.
Some viewers found the post offensive; others defended his right to speak freely. He declined to comment to WKOK. Police and fire company officials held a news conference yesterday to discuss the controversy and bomb threat.
