SUNBURY— The Sunbury City Council approved Mayor David Persing’s request to move forward with Norfolk Southern railroad negotiations. Persing said Monday night he wants the railroad the either fix up their blighted areas—or give up the land for redevelopment.

He says a major neighborhood reconstruction project could coincide with the rail crossing closure on Church Street, “If you would be on Fourth Street and go towards the railroad tracks on Church, the railroad owns a piece of property that would takes us over to the next street which is Penn Street.”

He said, “So what we are looking at is allowing to put that closure there, then they give us that piece of property, we could make like a big ‘U’ . So, you could come in on Church Street come around Orange and come out on Penn Street. That would be a major project, I would fight to get that to be the next project after the Chestnut Street project.”

Norfolk Southern is looking at six different intersection in the city, Church Street, Linden Street and Woodlawn Avenue are the intersections being considered for closure. (Sarah Benek)
