SU receives $1.2 million grant

Susquehanna UniversitySELINSGROVE – A million dollar grant will help Susquehanna University educate future teachers from underserved communities. The $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation will provide scholarships to help recruit and educate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students and professionals to become teachers in grades 7 through 12.

The program will prepare teachers for working in diverse and underserved communities. Students will complete their student teaching requirement in high-need school districts, including Shikellamy School District in Northumberland County.

Susquehanna University says they will recruit scholars from historically underserved populations including minorities, low-income and first-generation college students. Valerie Allison, chair of Susquehanna’s department of education says, “We hope that this will encourage more students from underrepresented populations to pursue these fields because they can see themselves in the faces of their teachers.”

Upon graduation, students will be required to complete two years of teaching in a high-need district for each year of grant support they received.
