- INCIDENT DETAILS
Between 11/09/12 and 04/23/17, the Pennsylvania State Police have investigated a series of kidnappings, rapes and attempted kidnappings, within Northumberland County, PA. An intensive investigation has led to the arrest of John E. KURTZ, 43 years of age, and a resident of Shamokin, PA. KURTZ has been charged with the kidnapping and rape of two women and the attempted kidnapping of a third woman in Northumberland County, PA. During the commission of these crimes, KURTZ would break into the Victim’s residences, kidnap them, take them to another location and rape them. KURTZ was identified as a Suspect through DNA evidence and digital evidence, which was collected through the execution of multiple search warrants and court orders.
KURTZ is a Corrections Officer with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and currently assigned to SCI Coal Twp. Throughout this investigation, the Department of Corrections provided valuable assistance in bringing KURTZ to justice.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation provided investigative assistance and support, with multiple consultations with the Bureau’s Behavioral Assessment Unit.
The Pennsylvania State Police utilized extensive resources, including the Bureau of Forensic Services, Aviation, Electronic Surveillance, Computer Forensics, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to assist with solving this case.
KURTZ was arraigned before on call District Justice Michael Diehl in Milton, PA. Bail was established at $1,500,000. KURTZ was remanded to the Centre County Prison.
The citizens of Northumberland County and surrounding Counties can rest assured tonight, knowing that a serial rapist has been taken off the streets and is securely housed in prison.
