More Tragedy in Snyder County, Man Dies in Farm Accident

CHAPMAN TOWNSHIP, SNYDER COUNTY – More sad news out of Snyder County.  A Selinsgrove man has died as a result of injuries from a farm accident in Chapman Township, Snyder County Saturday evening.

Selinsgrove state police say killed was 73-year-old Wayne Kantz, who was a passenger during the accident involving a farm implement along Stahls Hill Road just before 10 p.m. Troopers say the driver was 51-year-old Joseph Kantz of Selinsgrove, who was not injured. The younger Kantz is a regional leader, and an elected Snyder County commissioner.

Troopers say Joseph Kantz was driving a tractor, pulling a corn picker, with Wayne Kantz riding on the tractor’s left rear fender. Troopers say as the tractor was descending a hill, the corn picker began pushing the tractor down the hill, and Joseph Kantz lost control. The tractor struck a ditch, and then an embankment, which ejected Wayne Kantz from the tractor. Troopers say Wayne Kantz was then struck by and entrapped underneath the corn picker.

Troopers say emergency crews responded quickly, but discovered Wayne Kantz ultimately died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Wayne Kantz was later pronounced dead at the scene by Snyder County Coroner Bill Pheasant.

Selinsgrove state police investigated three fatal mishaps this weekend.
