Smoking number one risk for Vascular Disease

rockredLEWISBURG — One more pitch for healthy hearts…Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation and Evangelical Community Hospital are wrapping up February’s Rock Red for Health Hearts. One aspect of heart health–is vascular health. Surgeon Dr. Todd Stefan told us, the biggest risk factor in vascular health is smoking.

He said in a recent interview, “Nobody gets out of my office without the discussion of smoking and the smoking cessation if they’re a smoker because it is the single (strongest) or most impactful, risk factor for patients.”

Dr. Stefan say, if you are a smoker, and you have any vascular disease, you won’t live a long life, “If you are alive there is a very good chance you won’t have both of your legs or you could be on dialysis or you could have had heart attacks or strokes. But generally we have to talk about survival and if it really is survival.”

Dr. Todd Stefan, a vascular surgeon at Evangelical Community Hospital, says, as for diet, removing processed foods from your diet will also benefit your health. You can hear more on vascular disease and Dr. Stefan’s full interview on  WKOK Sunrise. ( Lauren Koch)
