SUNBURY – The Shikellamy girls bowling team had a stellar season with a state championship and a strong showing in the national tournament. Monday night, Sunbury city council honored the team for their achievements. The also got accolades from the Northumberland County Commissioners, and even a certificate from US Congressman Lou Barletta (R-11th, Hazelton).
With the whole team in attendance, and in front of a packed house, Northumberland County Commissioners Sam Schiccatano and Rick Shoch presented each team member with a certificate of achievement. A representative from Cong. Barletta’s gave them a certificate of special congressional recognition.
Mayor David Persing did his part by making a very special proclamation for the ladies, “As I told them, I am the only one who can declare a ‘City of Sunbury Day’ for them, and I did it. Everybody else might’ve given them proclamations; I gave them the City of Sunbury Day.”
Mayor Persing says its days like today that really separates Sunbury from the rest, “It’s great to be able to recognize people that made a difference in our community. This is what separates Sunbury and Northumberland from the rest of the world. This our success story and we get to brag about it.”
The last time the Shikellamy girls bowling team won the state title, there was no national tournament. This year they finished 4th in the national tournament.
