Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance Receives DEP Funding

HARRISBURG – Some more state funding is coming to The Valley.

The state DEP has announced a hundred million dollars in environmental restoration projects on former coal lands, and some of that funding is coming to The Valley.

In Northumberland County, the Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance will receive over $400,000 for their Kulpmont West (Quaker Run Restoration).

That project will remove existing box culverts, address stream impacts from abandoned underground coal mine subsidence areas, and restore the stream.

In Schuylkill County, DEP says Ashland Community Enterprises will receive $606,000. Their Ashland Pioneer Tunnel project will reclaim multiple acid mine drainage sites affecting the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train

DEP Interim Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley said, “Reclaiming abandoned mine land is a crucial endeavor, restoring both the environment and communities in our Commonwealth…

These grant recipients are taking on projects that pave the way for meaningful efforts that improve water quality, foster ecosystem recovery, and revitalize communities for a greater quality of life for Pennsylvanians.”
