Seminar for those wanting to be school board members

CSIU_logo_188_WEBSUNBURY – What does a school board member really entail? Some Valley leaders have gotten together to organize a seminar for people who are interested in becoming a local school board member.  Gary Grossman, publisher of the Daily Item, decided this was an important seminar to have for people wanting to get involved in their school board, but not knowing what to expect.

Grossman said, “Over the years, I have known a lot of people who have run for local school boards and there is a common theme.  They have good intentions.  They want to do it for the children and to make their communities better.  But, when they get on a school board, they sometimes find that the work is different, that the role is different, and that they may or may not have had as much impact as they thought they would have.”

Dr. Kevin Singer, executive director of the CSIU, says State Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-108th, Sunbury) will welcome the attendees, “She’s going to be talking about the role of public service, and talking specifically about what it’s like to serve the public in an elected capacity.  Then we are going to move to a welcome from the School Boards Association from the president-elect, who also happens to be one of our local school board members, Kathy Swope.”  Following the discussion by Kathy Swope there will then be a panel discussion with three panelists.

The seminar is this Saturday at the CSIU in Montandon. It is sponsored by the Daily Item and the IU, and is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. the 10:30 a.m.  You can register online at www.csiu.org.  You can hear more from Dr. Kevin Singer, Gary Grossman and Lewisburg School Board President Kathy Swope on WKOK’s Wednesday On The Mark program online at www.wkok.com.  (Ali Stevens)
