SELINSGROVE – Selinsgrove School District Superintendent Chad Cohrs is remembering his predecessor Dr. Fred Johnson, who died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 69. Cohrs said Dr. Johnson served as a mentor and role model for all in the district, “He really brought some stability to the district, because prior to him arriving, we had some superintendent turnover, so he provided some consistency in district leadership.”
Cohrs talked about some of Dr. Johnson’s accomplishments, “Under his leadership, we actually implemented full-day kindergarten, which was a big benefit to the district. We also underwent a building project, which allowed us to expand Selinsgrove Elementary and bring all of our elementary school students on to campus. That also included some renovations to the football stadium, putting in the artificial turf and all-weather track.”
And Cohrs said Dr. Johnson was a dedicated Seal, “One of Doc’s passions besides education was certainly football. I think if you asked him, I think one of the highlights of his career here was his involvement with the state championship football team.”
Dr. Johnson served as superintendent in the Selinsgrove district from 2000 to 2010. He left Selinsgrove to head the Souderton Area School District. He left Souderton in 2013 to head the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit, and to be closer to family. (Ali Stevens)
