SUNBURY – Saving money on electricity is the subject of an upcoming breakfast seminar. SEDA-COG is hosting the event to educate consumers on saving money through energy rebates, incentives, programs, and more.

Stacy Richards, from SEDA-COG’s Energy Resource Center talked about the seminar, “PPL will be speaking about its Phase 3 of a program called E-Power and that is dictated by legislation passed in 2009 that requires the major electric utilities to provide energy efficiency and energy reduction programs to all of its customers.”

With advances in technology, electric companies saw the need to make changes to ensure customers are saving on energy and costs. Richards says the seminar will provide the latest information, “To date we’re now into the sixth year, but in the first three years of this program which begin in 2011, throughout Pennsylvania, electric consumers saved $4.2 billion through these programs. A lot of customers have taken advantage of it. But programs have changed a bit, technology has changed slightly and so we’re providing to the public this opportunity and within just a couple of hours learn opportunities where they can be making investments and getting rebates.”

Richards says you can save energy without a huge investment, “People think they’re going to have to invest a lot. I had an energy audit done about ten years ago. I heat with oil. I thought I had a pretty tight place. Turns out, I didn’t. I had drafts. For $200, in caulk and some other stripping for the doors, I was able to reduce my oil bill that year by 40%. It paid for itself within that first year and it just keeps on paying. That is the place to start. That is what these energy efficiency programs being offered do.”

The seminar will be held July 15 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Country Cupboard in Lewisburg. The cost is $25 and pre-registration required. You can register online at www.seda-cog.org under Calendar of events. (Alex Reichenbach)
