HARRISBURG – Valley State Representative David Rowe (R-85th, Lewisburg) says current State Speaker of the House Mark Rozzi was never interested in working as an independent in Harrisburg.
“I was very concerned about the practical application of it, and whether or not we could trust this last minute deal that was made on the floor on swearing in day. The first thing Speaker Rozzi did as soon as he had the gavel was, essentially, gavel us out, until they could come back with the majority,” Rowe said.
When asked about what a possible response from Governor Josh Shapiro has been, Rowe says the Democratic governor is ‘distancing’ himself, while trying to work things out behind the scenes.
The impasse in the state house has also made Rowe question whether jobs in the General Assembly should remain full-time, “If we are able to take two months off work and the commonwealth hasn’t been burned to the ground, I think we need to reassess whether or not we need to be a full-time body. The taxpayers have been footing the bill for the Capitol to be maintained and meanwhile the doors of the house are literally locked by the speaker. So much for an accessible, representative republic.”
