Route 11 open again following bad accident in Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND — The driver of a car, speeding the wrong way on a one-way street, caused a fiery accident in Northumberland Saturday night.  Police say the driver, who still hasn’t been identified, was speeding into Northumberland on Front Street/Route 11 and then turned around at King Street Park and drove back down Front Street, but going in the wrong direction.  The vehicle struck a pole in the 700 block of Front Street.

The vehicle was heavily damaged and caught fire.  The driver tried to flee the scene but was taken into custody by police and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Route 11 was closed from the time of the accident until 4 p.m. on Sunday.  Multiple PPL crews were on the scene fixing the pole that was knocked down, along with wires.  The accident caused a power and phone outage in Northumberland and Point Township.  At the peak of the outage, there were 2,000 customers without power.  The investigation continues.  (Ali Stevens)
