RIVERSIDE – Riverside’s mayor has resigned, claiming he’s being unfairly treated by borough council while discussing police coverage during last week’s winter storm. The Daily Item reports Joseph Oberdorf resigned Monday, effective immediately. Oberdorf distributed his letter of resignation at Monday’s night’s borough council meeting before leaving with his wife. Council did accept his letter.
The paper says Oberdorf felt he must resign after receiving a phone call about police coverage during last week’s winter storm. According to the paper, Oberdorf says the phone call was almost 24 hours after the beginning of the storm. When Oberdorf tried to discuss the police contract approved by council, a council member hung up the phone. According to the paper, council says there were no officers on duty the night of the storm.
Oberdorf also says he didn’t receive any phone calls during Thursday’s storm. He says being treated in this manner was “unacceptable” to him and his family. Oberdorf served as Riverside mayor since 2014.
