LEWISBURG — Over 200 people attended a gathering in Lewisburg Saturday to stand up against hate and intolerance. This was in response to flyers handed out in Lewisburg that promoted a white supremacist website.
Sue Ellen Feurstein co-organized the community affirmation event, “We have to, as a community, offer an opportunity for people to stand for the values that we think actually do reside in our community, as opposed to the values that were indicated on the literature.”
She talked about the speech Reverend Ann Keeler Evans gave to the group, “Go next door and meet your neighbors. Introduce yourself and take something over. Invite people for dessert and just strengthen the neighborhood affiliation, so that, as Ann suggested, we can walk each other home.”
And Feurstein says there are community events happening throughout The Valley that people can attend, “Give people an opportunity of saying, yes I am going to stand next to you and say no, not in my community. This is not what we, in the Lewisburg and in the neighboring areas, want to be about.”
Feurstein says it doesn’t always have to be in response to an act of intolerance. She says gathering is a way to say these are things we do agree on and believe in as a community. (Ali Stevens/Sara Lauver)
