AP Headlines 11/8/18
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democrats made significant inroads in both chambers of the Pennsylvania Legislature during Tuesday’s election, but Republicans began the day with margins large enough to absorb those losses and still have comfortable governing majorities in both the House and Senate. A Democratic electoral wave in the Philadelphia suburbs turned at least 12 state House and four state Senate districts from red to blue.
Five House and two Senate districts, all but one most recently in Republican hands, remain too close to call.
Rep. Kate Harper, a nine-term Montgomery County Republican, had survived a series of tough races over the years before losing Tuesday in a district almost evenly divided by party registration. “It’s too early to drink, but I am eating all the leftover Halloween candy,” Harper said Wednesday. “Those of us from the southeast, call us independent, call us moderate, call us bipartisan, whatever you want. We were in the minority in the Republican caucus, but the middle is where things happen.”
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s newly elected lieutenant governor said Wednesday he does not plan to move into the lavish state-owned official residence and hopes to make it available for some type of public use. Democrat John Fetterman said that he may rent a place in Harrisburg, but that he’s definitely not moving his family to Harrisburg or to the residence at Fort Indiantown Gap.
“We’re not going to reside in the mansion,” Fetterman said during a postelection visit to the Capitol newsroom. “My wife and I envision, and the governor supports, some kind of public usage of it. Particularly swimming for children.” He said his family will remain in Braddock, a western Pennsylvania steel town where he is mayor.
“Not that Harrisburg’s not a wonderful town,” Fetterman said, noting he grew up outside York, about 25 miles from the capital. But he added his family has “a real strong allegiance both practically but also symbolically to the community that I’ve been lucky enough to lead for the past four terms.”

NEW YORK (AP) — President Trump’s combative relationship with the media deteriorated further Wednesday with a news conference where he called some reporters rude and accused a PBS reporter of posing a racist question when she asked him about white nationalists. “It’s such a hostile media,” Trump said during his post-midterms news conference at the White House, after ordering reporter April Ryan of the American Urban Radio Networks to sit down when she tried to ask him a question.
The president complained that the media did not cover the humming economy and was responsible for much of the country’s divided politics. He said that “I can do something fantastic, and they make it look not good.”
His exchanges with CNN’s Jim Acosta and NBC News’ Peter Alexander turned bitterly personal, unusual even for a forum where the nature of their jobs often put presidents and the press at odds. “I came in here as a nice person wanting to answer questions and I had people jumping out of their seats screaming questions at me,” said Trump, who talked for nearly 90 minutes despite the run-ins with reporters.
NEW YORK (AP) — There was a good election turnout on television, too. The Nielsen company said Wednesday that 36.1 million people watched midterm election results on TV, a whopping 59 percent increase over the last midterms in 2014. For the last midterm election during Barack Obama’s presidency, an estimated 22.7 million people watched the counting. Nielsen said it was the largest midterm election audience dating back to 2002. Fox News Channel led the way with 7.78 million viewers.
Not only did Fox have the biggest audience, it made the boldest move of any network in declaring that Democrats would take control of the House of Representatives far ahead of its rivals, and its election team proved to be correct. NBC was second with an average of 5.69 million viewers in prime time. ABC had 5.26 million, CNN had 5.07 million, MSNBC had 4.75 million and CBS had 3.86 million, Nielsen said. The broadcast networks sensed the interest, providing three hours of coverage, up from one hour in prime time during the more recent midterms. Nielsen says 36.1 million people watched midterm returns
KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) — Twin sisters who represented different parties when they ran for seats on the same western Michigan county board will not be working side-by-side. Monica Sparks, a Democrat, and her Republican sister, Jessica Ann Tyson, each won their party’s nomination for the Kent County Board of Commissioners in August during the Michigan primary election.
They ran in different Grand Rapids-area districts for the seats. Unofficial results show Sparks was the top vote-getter Tuesday for her seat, while Tyson finished second in her district. That means Sparks will serve on the board while her sister won’t. Sparks has said she decided to run for office when her sister declared her candidacy. They’ve said they were adopted into a family that taught them to pay attention to government and public affairs.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The battle for supremacy in smartphones is about to become hinged — at least when it comes to screens. Samsung and other companies are looking at the possibility of creating devices that have flexible screens that can be folded in half without breaking. The foldable screens could make it possible for to create larger screens than currently available — while keeping the devices at a size that can still fit in a pocket. At the same time, there are questions about whether such screens can be durable — and how much they would cost.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department gathered about 20 saluting officers and held an aviation flyover to honor an Emergency Services K-9 just before she died. The New York Daily News reports the 5-year-old bloodhound named Angel was diagnosed with cancer in August. She was honored on Monday as she took a final walk into Staten Island’s Rosebank Animal Hospital to be euthanized.
In her time with the police force, Angel helped find missing autistic children and track down crime suspects. She received an American Kennel Club award for her service. Her human partner, Officer Manuel Orellana, says Angel also enjoyed some typical dog mischief while off-duty. He fondly remembers her emerging from his Long Island garden with an eggplant or cucumber in her mouth.
NEW YORK (AP) — Mariah Carey, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill and Mike Love of The Beach Boys are nominees for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So are Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, Lloyd Price and Tommy James. Missy Elliott has been nominated, and if chosen, would be the first female rapper inducted and only the third rapper ever, after Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri. Several non-performing songwriters are nominated as well. The hall members will vote through Dec. 17. Six nominees will be chosen for induction at a ceremony in New York in June.

(AP) — Avi Toomer forced a tie in regulation, broke it to begin overtime and corralled the rebound of a missed 3-pointer as time expired in overtime, preserving Bucknell’s 88-85 victory over Saint Bonaventure in a season-opening game that pitted two teams from last season’s NCAA Tournament. Toomer scored nine points, Kimbal Mackenzie led the Bison with 28 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with three seconds left in regulation as Bucknell erased a 13-point deficit in the final 12 minutes. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The nation’s leading rusher, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, is headed back east when the Badgers face No. 21 Penn State on Saturday. The New Jersey native says he expects a lot of family members and friends to make the trip to Beaver Stadium. Taylor is coming off a win over Rutgers in which he ran for 208 yards and three scores. After opening holes for him, his blockers enjoy watching Taylor’s ability to break out for big runs and marvel at his vision at the line. The Nittany Lions play on 1070AM WKOK and WKOK.com.
