HARRISBURG – Lawmakers took action Wednesday to provide funding for the remainder of the 2015-16 state budget. The House and Senate put forth supplemental budget legislation to address funding holes created by the Governor’s vetoes and to restore state funding for these programs. Governor Tom Wolf has threatened to veto the legislation.
State Representative Kurt Masser says they need to move forward from the impasse, “We have to do whatever it takes to keep our schools open. I think the governor’s intent is to close schools down to create crisis. We don’t need crisis. We can’t use these kids as pawns in this game. It’s not a game. We need kids in school. We need to keep the schools open.”
The funding bill approved provides for a $200-million increase for basic education, a 5 percent increase for higher education and ensures that no schools will close. (Ali Stevens)
