Remembering Sidney Apfelbaum’s military service

20160401_085319SUNBURY – Sunbury attorney Sidney Apfelbaum died Thursday at the age of 95. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honored earlier this year with a Red Cross Hero Award.

At the presentation, he was recognized by his friend Joe Diblin for his service and the capture of three enemy soldiers. In accepting the award in April, Apfelbaum said, “I meant sincerely what I told Joe Diblin to say with regard to the true heroes of World War II, of which I was merely a Private working in a field artillery unit. At the moment I captured these three Germans, not two, but three, I was just scared. My rifle went off quickly enough to scare them more than I was and they threw down their weapons and surrendered.”

Apfelbaum said the real heroes are the service members who did not come home. (Mark Lawrence/Jennifer Wakeman)
