PENN TOWNSHIP – There is no more free lunch for recycling centers in some Snyder County municipalities. Brenda Moyer, recycling coordinator for Penn Township, says their hauler will be assessing a fee of $130 per load beginning in January. The previous contract with LCRMS did not include a hauling fee.
Penn Township estimates that will cost $24,400 per year for recycling. Several options are being considered, but each includes additional expense or logistical challenges. Franklin Township, Spring Township, and Freeburg Borough are also in similar situations.
Moyer says the market for recyclables has dwindled and haulers are losing money on every load. She says Snyder County commissioners are working to meet with all the affected municipalities to find a solution. (Alex Reichenbach/Jennifer Wakeman)
