SELINSGROVE – The Regional Engagement Center in Selinsgrove says the future of its summer camp is in jeopardy after the nonprofit only received a fraction of requested funding.
REC President Kelly Feiler posted on the REC’s Facebook page Tuesday its summer camp is only being awarded $7,100 of its requested $30,000 from the Gelnett Trust Fund.
The fund is administered by Selinsgrove Borough Council, who went through a months-long dispute over Gelnett funding for the REC because of a conflict-of-interest controversy.
In addition, Feiler says council only approved $216 of $15,000 requested from the Gelnett fund for its Spring Drop-In program that served over 240 youth this past academic year.
Feiler said in the statement if anyone has an issue ‘be sure to let (council members) Bobbie Owens, Shane Hendricks, and Scott Frost know.’
She also noted the REC had 50 children start its Fall Drop-In program this week.
Feiler also questioned borough council, ‘why the lack of concern for our youth today?’ when the REC has received full funding in the past.
Feiler added council made changes to the Gelnett rules after applications for 2023 were due and ‘after they had acted on all applications.’ She says council applied the new rules to the REC’s application.
