SELINSGROVE — Several Valley organizations have joined together to try to raise funds for the centerpiece of downtown Selinsgrove. The Commons is in need of some routine maintenance due to its increasingly busy schedule of events.
President of Selinsgrove Projects Inc. Carol Handlan discusses the Commons Trust Fund and their goal, “We’re trying to raise $100,000 so we can maintain the Commons. We’re 85% there. So hopefully, in this last third phase of raising funds, the community will come forth.”
Handlan says most people don’t realize the Commons is maintained by volunteer-based efforts, “The Commons is our gateway to the borough building and the library. Because of that, a lot of people think that it is owned by the borough when it’s not. Because it’s owned by Selinsgrove Projects Inc., it’s a volunteer-based organization and it’s all volunteer effort that maintain the Commons and its beauty for downtown.”
Sara Lauver, a member of the Selinsgrove Farmers’ Market Committee, said the funds are needed so more community events such as Santa Fest can still be held at the Commons, “The Farmers’ Market is really going strong this year and we have our last market this Saturday. However, we are going to have a Thanksgiving market in November as well as a holiday market in December. The Commons really is like the living room of the downtown. Even in just the next two months we have a pet parade, the tree lighting, and Santa Fest. The Commons really is a gem.”
