SUNBURY – Yes, Sunbury is a welcoming and peaceful community…so says religious group, “Sunbury Together.” The group is hosting “A Taste of Welcome” Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 at Cameron Park in Sunbury. The event comes at the start of the Jewish holiday, Sukkot, honoring the tradition of gathering together and welcoming guests. Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Susquehanna Valley Ann Keeler-Evans is one of the event organizers.
She says using this holiday is a key reminder Sunbury is a welcoming community despite recent racial tension, “This is not Sunbury. This is not who we are. We are a welcoming group, not by the sentiments of those flyers. So we’re giving the people the opportunity to just come together to be good neighbors.”
The event will feature some of the specialty and symbolic foods of different faith communities that make up Sunbury Together, “We’ll have a table that talks about what we believe welcome means in our traditions. We’re making what are now becoming our ‘world peace cookies.’ Somebody said they’re chocolate chocolate-chunk cookies and somebody said these cookies are good enough to make world peace.”
