SUNBURY – The Northumberland County District Attorney is warning residents of another phone scam. A Mount Carmel man received a call from someone claiming to be an investigator with the DA’s office and demanded payment for an unresolved matter.
The man hung up and contacted the district attorney. He reported the number on his caller ID appeared as ‘Northumberland County.’ This is called ‘spoofing’ and it allows scammers to display a number belonging to another agency or person while placing a phone call.
District Attorney Tony Matulewicz reminds residents that any call that demands immediate payment is a scam attempt and government agencies, such as the IRS, state or local police, will never make contact by phone demanding money.
