Penn’s Tavern sells at auction

Penns Tavern

SUNBURY—The oldest building in Northumberland County was sold to the highest bidder last night. Tom Mertz, owner of Sunbury Motor Company, bought Penn’s Tavern for $290,000. The property is located seven miles south of Sunbury on Route 147. The price included the real estate, business, furnishings, and liquor license.

Mertz says he plans to continue the business as a restaurant, “Exactly the theme, or when we are going to do that, I’m not sure.  The property itself, the building, the history goes along with it.”

There will be a second auction at the property on November 14 at 10 AM. Household furnishings, antiques, beer advertising memorabilia, and excess restaurant items will be sold. (Kory Kramer)
