STONINGTON — State police say a PennDOT truck hit a covered bridge in Northumberland County last week, and troopers were notified four days later.
The collision occurred on March 20 around 2:20 p.m. in Washington Township, Northumberland County. According to police, 41-year-old Trent Curcie of Shamokin was driving the truck when he struck an overhead caution sign before entering the bridge on Covered Bridge Road near Schwaben Creek Road.
Troopers say the truck weighed more than twice the bridge’s 3-ton posted weight limit as it traveled over the structure. Curcie left the scene, and the collision wasn’t reported to authorities until four days later. After inspection, officials determined the bridge did not need to be closed.
This is the second time troopers at Stonington have investigated a case where a truck hit and damaged a bridge and didn’t report it. A commercial vehicle heavily damaged the Route 225 bridge in Dornsife last year. When police were notified, the bridge had to be closed, and a million-dollar repair project was completed.
