PennDOT to design acceptable, scaled back Route 54/642 project

DANVILLE – The roundabout is out and a traffic signal will go in, at the busy and sometimes dangerous intersection of Route 54 and 642 near Danville. After a series of public meetings over the past year, PennDOT says they will begin the design and eventual re-construction of the Route 54-642 project just outside Danville.

The Press-Enterprise reports a public meeting was held Tuesday night at Danville Middle School. PennDOT announced on Route 54 west, they’ll install left-turn lanes west as you approach Route 642. A new intersection configuration is also planned with traffic signals and a small portion of Route 642 will be moved.

The paper says no roundabout is planned at this time, a move that’s been opposed by many residents. The project’s estimated cost is $16 million. Officials say it’ll be funded with federal money. The two-year project is expected to start in early 2021.
