PennDOT: School is in session, be alert!

HARRISBURG — The beginning of the school year means the return of school buses to Valley roadways. PennDOT reminds motorists of the significant penalties for motorists who ignore the flashing red lights on school buses.

Motorists in all directions are required to stop at least 10 feet from a bus.The only exception is for vehicles on the opposite side of a divided highway. If convicted of violating Pennsylvania’s school bus stopping law, drivers face a $250 fine, five points on their driving record and a 60-day license suspension.

PennDOT says motorists should be alert in school zones and slow down to the posted 15 mile an hour speed limit. Violators face fines and three points on their license for speeding in a school zone.
