PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Several Area Roadways
Montoursville, PA – Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on several roadways in the region.
PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:
- Interstate 180 the entire length
- Interstate 80 from the Route 38 interchange in Venango County to I-81 in Luzerne County
- Route 220 from I-80 in Clinton County to I-180 in Lycoming County
On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane.

Montoursville, PA – Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily restricting commercial trucks and large trucks on Route 54 in Northumberland County and Route 44 in Lycoming County in northcentral Pennsylvania.
- Route 54, Natalie Mountain, between Route 487 in Ralpho Township and Route 61 in Mount Carmel Township, in Northumberland County.
- Route 44 between Route 554 in Elimsport (Washington Township) and Route 654 in Limestone Township (just south of Jersey Shore) in Lycoming County.

PennDOT Restricts Certain Vehicles on Interstate 80
Montoursville, PA – Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily restricting certain vehicles on Interstate 80 in northcentral Pennsylvania.
Vehicle restrictions reflect Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan (PDF), and are in effect on the following roadways:
- Interstate 80 from Interstate 99 to Interstate 81.
Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
- Tractors without trailers;
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers;
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers;
- Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV;
- Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers;
- Recreational vehicles/motorhomes;
- School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches; and
Speed limits will be restricted to 45 mph on these roadways for all vehicles while the vehicle restrictions are in place, and commercial vehicles not affected by the restrictions must move to the right lane. Additional speed restrictions on other interstates could be added depending on changing conditions.
The purpose of the restriction is to help ensure the interstates remain open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm. When conditions improve, PennDOT will remove the travel restrictions.
Restrictions will be communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website at www.511PA.com and smartphone apps. Motorists can also sign up for alerts on the website.
Although PennDOT crews are treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.
